Learning Objectives:
I can...
  • understand methods of characterization
  • examine dialogue
  • practice oral fluency
  • reinforce the elements of a short story
Opening:
1. Please answer the Quickwrite at the top of page 115.

2. Share in a few examples aloud

3. Introduce "Metacognitive Markers"
Copy my notes on the board:
  • Question Mark (?): anything in the text you might have a question about
  • Exclamation Point (!): any part of the story that creates a reaction in you
  • Asterisk (*): anything in the story that you want to comment on during a discussion of the story

Work Period:

3. Read "Thank You, M'am" together on pages 116-119.

  • Use metacognitive markers as we read together.

4. After we've read:

  • mark the text by CIRCLING physical descriptions of the characters
  • try to visualize and SKETCH the characters in the "My Notes" section

Closing:

5. Discuss what you think you know about each character.

Tonight's HW:

  • Copy down the descriptions you've circled into the appropriate part of the Graphic Organizer on page 120.
  • Then, on the right, describe what you learn about the PERSON based on his or her appearance.
