Learning Focus:
I can...

  • examine dialogue
  • practice oral fluency
  • reinforce the elements of a short story

Opening:

1. Create groups based on which part of "Thank you, M'am" you were assigned yesterday.

2. Use what you know about each character based on yesterday's characterization exercises.

  • Create groups of 2 or 3
  • Rehearse the lines from your chunk with the other students in your group - gender doesn't matter, so pick a character
    • Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones
    • Roger
    • the narrator
  • express each character's feelings/tone
  • listen and coach one another so that the character "sounds right"
3. Perform for the group a "scene" from the story

Work Period:
4. Working with the same small group,
complete the Narrative Structure Diagram on page 123 for "Thank you, M'am"

Closing:

5. Return to your Circle Map in your journal for "Short Story".

  • include "Characterization" on your thinking map
6. Discuss - why is creating believable and "real" characters so important to a short story?
