Learning Objectives:
I can…

  • re-examine sequencing
  • analyze the elements of a nonfiction narrative
Spelling Bee Practice during Tutorials today…ask to come to my room

Opening:
1. Share in small groups: Quickwrites on page 23.

Work Period:
2. Shared reading of Paragraphs 1-3
  • How does the writer "set-up" his personal narrative?
3. Read through paragraphs 4 and 5 to yourself.
  • When does the "incident" actually begin?

4. Read the remainder of the personal narrative to yourself (it isn't a race!)
Highlight and/or underline the following elements in the narrative:

  • the setting (time and place)
  • the situation (a summary of the kind of problem the narrator encounters)
  • the sequence of events within the actual incident
  • the sentence that ends the incident

5. Once everyone is finished in your group, together discuss and mark the text:

  • select an adjective to describe the narrator during the incident
  • identify the conflicts and how they were resolved
  • put a STAR * by a section of the narrative that would benefit from some dialogue
6. Large group review of the elements in #4 and #5.

Closing/Homework:
7. In your journal, write a dialogue between VERNON and the NARRATOR.  Use proper dialogue tags and punctuation.
