Learning Objectives:

  • How do I closely read a text to analyze an author's use of diction to portray a character?
  • What is the best way to revise writing by adding figurative language?

Tonight Finish Reading 23-25.

  • Three DEJ Entries: Figurative Language
    • If you already did TWO, do some rereading and be a DICTION DETECTIVE for your third.
    • That's #16-18.

Warm-Up:
1. In your group of three:
  • Get a computer and logon to SBD.
  • Go to Activity 2.9.

2.   Each person in the group should choose a different word or phrase.
  • Write the word/phrase on one side of a notecard
  • Write your analysis on the other.

3. Walk around and "share" your word or phrase with others in the room.

Work Period:
4. Look at how the word "malinger" comes up in conversation between Phoebe and her father.
  • In your group, decide which context clues could have helped Phoebe understand the word without looking it up in the dictionary.

5. What context clues in Chapter 22 help you understand the words frenzy, cardigan, skittish and sullen?

6. Review the three types of figurative language that we've been discussing this year:
  • Simile
  • Metaphor
  • Personification
What is the definition of each?

7. Skim back through some of your DEJ and/or the book.
  • Locate at least THREE passages that contain figurative language and write your favorite on an index card.
  • Write an explanation of why Creech uses the figurative language at that moment.  What ideas does the figurative language convey?
  • Also write about why you found it so interesting.
8. With your group, copy down the THREE passages into #5.

Closing:
9. Language and Writer's Craft: Figurative Language.

  • Review the Samples, then try your own as a small group (#1-3).

10. Complete #4 - Review the sample, underline where figurative language could be added, then add it to a sentence below or on a sticky note.

Handback - 2.5 and 2.6.
