I can...
  • explore the concept of voice by speaking in the voice of a character
  • identify textual support for an opinion
  • write commentary that explains the significance of textual evidence
  • develop a body paragraph
Opening:
1. With a partner, share your letter on page 210.
  • If it helps, role play with those around you...
    • Imagine you are having a conversation between two teachers and discuss Walter.
    • Try to CONVINCE the other teacher to treat Walter in a way that will allow him to excel.
2. How does this exercise help you understand the concept of Voice?

3. HW tonight
In your class notebook:
  • create a graphic organizer that includes the word "voice" in the center.
  • Include the following four elements:
    • your definition
    • three examples
    • a visual representation
    • the word used in context (in a sentence)
    Work Period:
    4. Read the introductory paragraph at the top of page 211.

    5. Review the graphic organizer on 211 with the sample

    • It includes:
      • Topic Sentence (Main Idea)
      • Detail/Example (Evidence)
      • Commentary(Analysis)
    • It does NOT include:
      • enough details/evidence
      • transitions
      • a concluding sentence (Link)
    6. Copy your REVISED topic sentence for #1.

    7. Organize your details and your commentary on the graphic organizer for #2 (just an outline!)
    • You will develop this more with transitions, additional commentary, and a concluding sentence.
    8. Write a concluding sentence (LINK) on page 212 for #3.

      Closing:
      9. If time allows, get started on your VOICE graphic organizer.
