UIL Writing  - Last Call

Other Events?

Warm-Up:
1. Share your responses from your DEJ about Chapters 11-12.
  • CN Entry: 3/29: "Character Traits"
    • Do a little sharing aloud of characters and Details.
    • What other words come to mind since meeting all of these characters?
      • In the dictionary, find at least two new words that are appropriate for a character.

2. Review the requirements of a compare/contrast paragraph (“A part of analyzing…).

  • Why are transitional words and phrases important in writing about two subjects?

3. Share a few paragraphs on the overhead:   3/29: Comparing Sal and Phoebe.

  • Topic Sentence
  • Supporting Details (Textual Evidence)
  • Commentary (Explain and analyze evidence)
  • Transitional words and phrases.

Work Period:
4.    So, students should have created Three timelines…present them to me!
Timeline #1: Sal’s Timeline (Kentucky)

  • Sal’s early timeline is fuzzy – we get somewhat random “snapshots” of her past
Timeline #2: Phoebe and Sal’s Timeline Together (Ohio)

  • Phoebe’s timeline is a straight, uninterrupted narrative in the novel.  Sal has some significant experiences, too.
Timeline #3: Sal's Timeline (The Road Trip: Ohio to Idaho)

  • Involves Gram and Gramps, and their many, often humorous, misadventures together.

Class Notebook: 3/31: Physical and Emotional Journeys
Have your novel and DEJ at the Ready...

Use Details from the Text as we discuss and take notes on the following:

A. Phoebe's Story (Timeline 2):

  • What are the most significant events in the story of Phoebe?
  • What are the most significant character traits of Phoebe or Phoebe's parents?
    • What do you predict or infer from these events and these characters?

B. Sal's Story (Timelines 1-3):

  • What are significant events in Sal's story?
  • What are Sal's most significant traits?
C. Emotional Journeys:
  • What predictions or inferences do you have about Sal's emotional journey?
  • Do you think Phoebe is on an emotional journey of any kind?
D. Gram and Gramps - Subplots:
  • What is their timeline together?  Do they have a plot?
    • Can we call this a "subplot"?
    • What is the plot and what are "subplots"?
    • What other subplots are there?
      • Phoebe?
      • Ben and Sal?
      • The Lunatic?
      • Life in Kentucky?
      • The Road Trip?
        • Confusing, right?

In all of this discussion and writing, please remember:

  • In Literary Analysis, it is NOT so much about the right answer as it is about providing an opinion on a topic and supporting it with various pieces of textual evidence that combine to create your opinion.

Closing:
Under all of the notes you've taken for "Physical and Emotional Journeys", create a graphic organizer at sometime that helps you analyze and explore the concepts of Plot and Subplot.
